After-School Art Programs

Confirmation letters will be sent home to parents with more information. Our after-school arts programs are offered to a wide age range of students. Please be sure to register only for what class your student is eligible for. There will be a bus to program sites (for those starting right after school) however, there is no bus home. Please have arrangements made for the pick-up of your student. Let the art begin!

 

Art Club - (Grades 4 & 5) with instructor Cindy McGuirl. A variety of art topics using different techniques are offered throughout the year. Students get a brief lesson on how to use the new materials and then create their own, unique projects. Some topics are: Duct Tape Sculpture, Bookbinding and a Halloween mural. The class is flexible in topics. SCHEDULE: Begining October 9 - October 31 (BREAK FOR 3 WEEKS) starting again November 27 - December 19. Meets at Thomaston Grammer School. Tuesdays and Wednesdays you may sign up for one or both days. After school until 5:30. No class when school is closed, including but not limited to: holidays, early release days, and snow days.

 

Arts with Heart - (Grades 6 - 8) with instructor Alexis Iammarion. MURAL ARTS in the heart of Rockland! Think big, design big and lend your talents to a cause! This year-long painting workshop focuses on collaborative mural work and creating one-of-a-kind beautification on pieces for local organizations like our animal shelter, hospitals, schools, libraries and local businesses! SCHEDULE: Beginning October 11. Thursdays. Meets at Flanagan Community Building, YMCA. After school until 4:30. No class when school is closed, including but not limited to: holidays, early release days, and snow days.

 

Illustration and Graphic Novel Intensive - (Grades 9-12) with instructor Alexis Iammarino. This high school drawing intensive gives time, space and instruction to young artists interested in developing their drawing, narrative and character development skills. Artists in this workshop will each work on their own comic book or graphic novel, learn how to be a peer mentor and to work as a creative collectively to assist one another in becoming confident and independently driven artists! SCHEDULE: Beginning October 18. Thursdays. Meets at Flanagan Community Building, YMCA. 5:00-7:30pm. No class when school is closed, including but not limited to: holidays, early release days, and snow days.

 

Arts @ Work - (Grades 9 - 12, Mentorship Program) with instructor Alexis Iammarino. This year-long program introduces local high school students to professional practice in the arts and provides young artists an opportunity to express themselves through art in a positive environment while creating collaboratively and gaining experience in making public art to enhance their community. Designed specifically for high school students, this program aims to deepen artistic learning, enhance student portfolios, and introduce the skills and practices of community, studio arts, and arts administration. Students in this program develop an independent project that is at the core of their studio work and mentors and professionals in that field or medium(s) are matched based on project goals and interests. Entering into year two, RASA's/Arts @ Work program continues to partner with host site, the Center for Maine Contemporary Art’s ArtLab as a base for experiential and contemporary work in the arts. SCHEDULE: Beginning October 12. Fridays. Meets at CMCA, 21 Winter Street: After school - 4:30. No class when school is closed, including but not limited to: holidays, early release days, and snow days.

Business Ethics

Students will explore acceptable practices, workplace conduct, ethical decision making, use of social media, and individual and organizational ethical behavior. Guided independent study course online. Call to express interest. Fee: $75.

College Next

Have you been thinking about beginning college for the first time, or returning to finish up your degree? Do you need to brush up on your math, computer or writing skills? 

YOU ARE NOT ALONE.

College Next is designed to prepare students for college with the skills and confidence to be successful. The program is offered by Maine College and Career Access (MCCA), with support from UMA-Rockland Center.  College Next consists of three sections; English skill building, Math skill building, COL 100-Introduction to the College Experience (3 credit course).  Students are encouraged to register for the full day, but may take any combination of the three sections.

Cost of books and supplies:        

$90 for full program (all three sections)

$70 COL 100 + one skill building class

$50 for COL 100 only

Fees may be paid in full at Orientation (payment plans are available).

Computer Basics

Learn the basics and stop feeling intimidated by computers. Build knowledge, comfort and skills regarding hardware, software, files, folders, operating systems, left click, right click, cut & paste, email, Internet, browsing and more. There will be no class on February 20.

Computer Training for Small Business

Your business is unique, so are your training needs. Our staff consultant works with you to assess your needs and to customize computer-based or business training for you and/or your staff. Workshops are offered at the McLain School computer lab classroom in all topics covered in our array of computer, business and workforce courses. From Business Ethics and Customer Service to Cloud Computing and managing company Excel spreadsheets, we will work to design and deliver training for your own unique business needs. One-On-One Training & Consulting, $45/hour plus planning time Small Group Training (up to 8 participants), $50/hour plus planning time. Private Tutoring & Consultation. Need assistance learning to use your computer? Work at your own pace with the instructor to get the individual help you need. Topics are limited to those covered in our array of courses. Bring your laptop or use a desktop provided in the McLain School Computer Lab. $45/hour by appointment.
